" Blooming in The Desert " By Beverly Guilliams............................
Prickly Pear Cactus Photograph, One of my first photos when we moved to Arizona. Love the Cactus Flowers.Though the Sonoran Desert has two flowering peaks, there is almost always something in bloom. The only exceptions are after a hard winter freeze or during severe droughts. Prickly pear cactus represent about a dozen species of the Opuntia genus (Family Cactaceae) in the North American deserts. All have flat, fleshy pads that look like large leaves. The pads are actually modified branches or stems that serve several functions -- water storage, photosynthesis and flower production.
Prickly pears typically grow with flat, rounded cladodes (also called platyclades) that are armed with two kinds of spines; large, smooth, fixed spines and small, hairlike prickles called glochids, that easily penetrate skin and detach from the plant. Many types of prickly pears grow into dense, tangled structures.
